Zaire’s 1974 World Cup

Motion Graphics

The Challenge

The goal of this project was to create a video that explained a complex topic in a short, simple way using typography and images. I had to research the story, write and condense a script, hire a voice actor, and finally, design and animate the entire video.

In what should have been a trailblazing moment for African soccer as a whole, Zaire’s trip to the 1974 World Cup quickly went from bad to worse thanks to Joseph Mobutu, the nation’s ruthless dictator.

My Research

My research focused on the myth surrounding their performance at the tournament, what really happened, and how the politics of the Congo Crisis during the 1960’s were connected to it.

My Approach

Because this story took place in the 1960s and 1970s, I took a simple, textured graphic approach to match the older photos I would be using. I used bold typography, in order to emphasize important points in the voiceover, and the colors I chose reflected those on Zaire’s kit.
